FES
The Fes Experience
 |
|
The most ancient
of the imperial capitals, and the most complete medieval
medina of the Arab world, Fes is the cultural capital
of Morocco. The city has dominated Moroccan trade,
culture, gastronomy, architecture and religious life
since the end of the tenth century.
Suspended in time somewhere between Middles Ages
and the modern world, classified as a "World
Heritage site" by Unesco, and in the list of
the 2004 hot spots by Harpers and Queen, you will
enjoy in Fes the biggest Medina in Morocco, the most
authentic Moroccan art of living and some of the nicest
heritages of the Moroccan culture. |
Excursions and activities
The Atlas
At less than an hour from Fes, the Atlas
mountains, with a scenery which sometimes will remind you
of the Alps, offers you a range of unique activities. In
Azrou, you will discover the famous cedar forest and reserve,
one of four in the world. The region is also exceptional
for trekking, birdwatching and you can witness some interesting
wildlife. In Ifrane and Michlifen, the local ski stations,
you'll be able to try the Moroccan skiing experience.
Meknes and Volubilis
 |
|
At only 60 km
from Fes, Meknes is another medieval city where you
can visit some interesting palaces and souks. Meknes
is also one of the biggest producers of wine in Morocco
and visits of the wineries can be arranged.
Close to Meknes, you can also plan some time in
Volubilis, a Roman settlement constructed on what
was probably a Carthaginian city, dating from 3rd
century BC. |
Moulay Yacoub
At 15 km from Fes, Moulay Yacoub is
the most famous healing thermal station in Morocco. The
warm waters (54°C), with sulphur, burst naturally and
are internationally recognised for their therapeutic virtues.
Dining
The "fassi" cuisine, which
you will experiment in your stay at Villas of Morocco Riyad
Al Ghalia, is recognised as the most refined and authentic
of Morocco. The gastronomy of Fes shows a remarkable level
of sophistication with its subtle use of spices and herbs
and the frequent combination of sweet and sour.
There are also a few good Moroccan restaurants
in Fes.
Golf
Fes enjoys good golfing with the Fes
Royal Golf and the Meknes Royal Golf, both nine holes. Designed
by Cabell B. Robinson, the Fes Royal Golf has a magnificent
olive grove looking out towards the summits of the High
Atlas. The Meknes Golf is laid out at the heart of the imperial
city of the Sultan Moulay Ismaïl, with the roofs and
minarets of the medina as a background, in a garden overflowing
with flowers, plum, orange, palm, olive and apricot trees.
